A certain rabbi related that he met the Ridbaz [Rabbi Yaakov Dovid Wilovsky] in England. The Ridbaz was sitting at a train station waiting for the train. The narrator, who was then a young rabbi in England and spent his final days in Jerusalem, recounted that when he saw the Ridbaz sitting at the train station, he immediately sat down beside him and began saying that he had a difficult question on Tractate Yevamot…

The Ridbaz heard that he had a question on Tractate Yevamot and said to him: “One moment, Tractate Yevamot? What, you have a question on Tractate Yevamot? Let’s see what it says there in Tractate Yevamot… First, let’s learn the tractate, then we’ll hear the questions…” And immediately the Ridbaz began reciting Yevamot by heart…

The Ridbaz sat at the train station with his eyes closed, and with holy fervor he recited the Gemara, he recited Rashi’s commentary, and he recited Tosafot… page after page. He recited the entire passage of ‘Aleha’, which typically takes us several weeks to learn [as Rav Shach once said in the yeshiva, in a humorous rebuke, that the reason for the lack of rain that winter was because the Angel of Rain saw that at the end of winter they were still studying the pages that should have been learned at the beginning of winter]. The Ridbaz sat at the train station, his eyes closed. And he recited… he had already finished the ‘Aleha’ passage. And he had already finished page 9 with all of the lengthy Rashi commentary on page 9b about ‘her sister who is her yevama performs chalitza but does not undergo yibbum,’ he said it all, the Ridbaz… He said it with the lengthy Rashi, and he continued until page 10.

Then the Ridbaz said joyfully: “So far we’ve learned the passage in the Babylonian Talmud… Now let’s recite the… Jerusalem Talmud…” And so the Ridbaz sat and recited the Jerusalem Talmud by heart. He finished the entire Jerusalem Talmud on that passage, and he was about to continue, when the train arrived in the middle, and he had to board the train…
