English Translation
Our Rabbi [the Ridbaz, may the memory of the righteous be blessed] was a great wit and would respond to everything with brilliant sharpness, and his countenance was always cheerful, happy and good-hearted. Once, the synagogue gabbaim [wardens] came before him regarding a cantor they had hired to pray for them during the High Holidays and had made a contract with him. Later, when another synagogue offered him more, he backed out, and the people of the first synagogue brought him to a Din Torah [religious court case]. After our Rabbi heard the arguments of both sides, he asked the cantor if he was a Chazzan or just a Ba’al Tefillah [prayer leader], and when he answered that he was just a Ba’al Tefillah, he ruled that the cantor must pray at the amud [prayer podium] in the first synagogue. His witty explanation was that the difference between a Chazzan and a Ba’al Tefillah is that a Chazzan repeats and triples the words while a Ba’al Tefillah says each word only once, and since the Ba’al Tefillah had given his word to the first synagogue, he is forbidden to change it.

רַבֵּנוּ [הָרִידְבָּ”ז זַצַ”ל] הָיָה בַּעַל הֲלָצָה גָּדוֹל וּבַחֲרִיפוּת גְּאוֹנִית הֵגִיב עַל כָּל דָּבָר, וְתָמִיד הָיְתָה
צָהֳלָתוֹ בְּפָנָיו, שָׂמֵחַ וְטוֹב לֵב: פַּעַם בָּאוּ לְפָנָיו גַּבָּאֵי בֵּית הַכְּנֶסֶת שֶׁשָּׂכְרוּ חַזָּן לְהִתְפַּלֵּל אֶצְלָם בַּיָּמִים הַנּוֹרָאִים
