In 1864, when the Malbim sat on the rabbinical throne in Bucharest and led his congregation with a strong hand according to Torah and tradition, seeking to dwell peacefully in Torah study and divine service, he was beset by the wrath of the Maskilim [Jewish enlightenment followers], against whom he fought powerfully and wisely, not allowing them to carry out their schemes to undermine the foundations of religion and Torah. Their fury burned intensely against him, and they despised him until they denounced him to the authorities, who judged him as a rebel against the kingdom, bound him in chains, and imprisoned him.

When the Admor of Sadigura [Hasidic leader] of blessed memory learned of this, he made great efforts for his release and wrote a letter to Sir Moses Montefiore, describing to him the splendor of Malbim’s righteousness, his great stature, and his magnificent accomplishments for Torah and testimony. He defended the righteous one and condemned the Maskilim for falsely accusing him with lies and wicked allegations. Therefore, he requested his help to stand at the right hand of the righteous one and work for his release. Indeed, Sir Montefiore fulfilled his request and appealed to the Prince who was then ruler of Romania, and in the name of the British kingdom, urged him to release the Malbim. The Prince granted the request on the condition that the Malbim immediately leave Romania, and he was freed.

At the first opportunity, the Malbim of blessed memory traveled to the holy court in Sadigura to express his gratitude to the Admor for his efforts in securing his release from imprisonment. During his visit, he presented to the Admor his book “Artzot HaChaim” with the following inscription:

To the Holy Rabbi, Shepherd of Israel
From the name of the Shepherd, Stone of Israel…
The seer and watchman of Israel’s chariot and horsemen…
The Glory of Israel, may he be called holy, our teacher Rabbi A[braham]…
Head of the exile of Ariel, an offering…
