English Translation
His memory was extraordinary, he was like “a plastered pit that does not lose a drop” [a Talmudic expression referring to perfect retention]. Both Talmuds with Rashi’s commentary and Tosafot were fluently memorized by him, word for word. When he visited Europe in 1910 while traveling from the Land of Israel to raise support for Sabbatical year observers, he happened to share a train ride with Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog. It was nighttime, and the Ridbaz [Rabbi Yaakov David Wilovsky] “did not cease from study,” learning Gemara together with Rabbi Herzog, who was young at the time. Suddenly, the electric lights went out on the train, and to Rabbi Herzog’s amazement, the Ridbaz continued his studies in the darkness, continuing to recite the words of the Gemara and Rashi verbatim, as if he were reading directly from the Gemara itself.
