English Translation

“And you shall eat… and you shall praise… and they shall not be ashamed…”

I heard in the name of the holy Malbim [Rabbi Meir Leibush ben Yechiel Michel], may his merit protect us, that among philosophers and non-Jewish scholars, if one comes to his friend during mealtime, it is considered improper. The Malbim explained the reason: for them, eating is a physical necessity, and therefore eating is considered degrading, like any physical act that is not proper to do in front of others. However, regarding the Children of Israel, it is written (Joel 2:26) “And you shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God,” for they bless before their meal and bless after it, and therefore the end of the verse is fulfilled in them: “and My people shall never be ashamed,” for they have no disgrace.
