English Translation
According to a reliable tradition, when the holy Gaon Rabbi Israel Salanter [of blessed righteous memory] first met the Malbim and realized the extent of his Torah greatness and spiritual powers, he expressed with amazement these words: “His talents give us reason to hope that perhaps Divine Providence is preparing a new genius for our generation – like the Vilna Gaon in his time.”
And the holy Chofetz Chaim [Rabbi Israel Meir HaKohen, of blessed righteous memory], whenever he spoke of his greatness or studied his books, would burst forth – as his students from the Radin Yeshiva testified – with a yearning cry: “Oy, where can one find a mind like the Malbim’s?”

לְפִי מָסֹרֶת מְהֵימָנָה, כְּשֶׁהִכִּיר לָרִאשׁוֹנָה הַגָּה”צ רַבִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִסַּלַּנְט זצ”ל אֶת הַמַּלְבִּי”ם, וְעָמַד עַל הֶקֵּף גְּדֻלָּתוֹ בַּתּוֹרָה וְכֹחוֹתָיו הָרוּחָנִיִּים, הִתְבַּטֵּא בְּהִתְפַּעֲלוּת כְּהַאי לִישְׁנָא: “כִּשְׁרוֹנוֹתָיו נוֹתְנִים לָנוּ יְסוֹד לְקַוּוֹת, אוּלַי הַהַשְׁגָּחָה מַזְמִינָה לְדוֹרֵנוּ גָּאוֹן חָדָשׁ – כְּדֻגְמַת הַגְּרָ”א מִוִּילְנָא בִּשְׁעָתוֹ”.
