English Translation
He [the “Kol Aryeh”, may his merit protect us] also had a tradition that when he [the Malbim] was a son-in-law of a wealthy man near Brody, being a young married scholar of 18 years old, he regularly engaged in study at the study house of our holy Rabbi [of Zhidachov], may the memory of the righteous be blessed, and there he was authorized to study the wisdom of Kabbalah. He sat enclosed and secluded in a dark room for a year and a half, until he completed the books “Etz Pri” and “Etz HaChaim” and all the writings of the Ari [Rabbi Isaac Luria], of blessed memory.
